Although Thailand's history in regard to its
present location dates back only to the 13th century, the history
of its people goes further back than that. Originating in an area
south of the Yangzi River, China, the people belonged to an ethnic
group that spoke a language called Tai. The Tai people began migrating
out of China into mainland Southeast Asia soon after the 1st century
A.D. and brought with them their weaving technology, patterns,
and style. Weaving is still being done today in Thailand, but
it has now shifted from its traditional form to become slightly
more sophisticated and commercialized.
